In 1796, Asher B. Durand was born in Jefferson Village, New Jersey, now called Maplewood. After an apprenticeship with engraver Peter Maverick, Durand moved to New York City in 1817 to run Maverick's New York branch of the engraving firm. When Durand made the transition from engraving to oil painting, he continued to live in the city, maintaining a studio there until 1869, when he retired to Maplewood to spend the rest of his days.
