Hudson River School artist John Frederick Kensett arrived at Contentment Island in Darien, Connecticut, in 1867, seeking a peaceful retreat from public attention. On this island in the waters of Long Island Sound, Kensett constructed a home and studio, where he created paintings of the Connecticut shoreline. In addition, Kensett maintained a studio in New York City at the Waverly House on Broadway until his death in 1872.
