Cole's First Manhattan Studio

In addition to their Hudson Valley homes, Cole and many other Hudson River School artists chose to maintain a residence and studio in New York City as well. An urban workspace allowed the artists to be more intimately involved with the exhibition and sale of their artwork, especially during the winter months, when travel on the Hudson River was difficult. In the winter of 1827, Cole rented a studio at 2 Greene Street.
